It’s That Time of the Year: Pummelos Are Here!

As the crisp autumn air begins to settle, it’s time to welcome a seasonal delight: the majestic pummelo. If you haven’t yet discovered this citrus gem, now’s the perfect time to dive in. They are coming in our Signature Boxes this week!

What is a Pummelo?

Pummelos, the largest of the citrus family, are in season and ready to brighten your kitchen and palate. Often confused with grapefruit, the pummelo (Citrus maxima) is a true giant in the citrus world. Native to Southeast Asia, this fruit has been enjoyed for centuries. It is known for its thick, spongy rind and its sweet, juicy, and sometimes tangy flesh. The pummelo can be anywhere from the size of a grapefruit to a melon, with a weight of up to 5 pounds!

The pummelo’s rind is noticeably thicker than that of a grapefruit, often ranging from 1 to 2 inches. Inside, the fruit is segmented like an orange, with large, succulent sections that range in color from pale yellow to deep pink, depending on the variety. But unlike grapefruit, pummelos tend to have a sweeter, milder taste with less of the bitterness that you sometimes find in its smaller cousin.
